The launch highlighted the precautions engaged to ensuring that experiences are safe and abide by the covid protocols post the President Cyril Ramphosa’s announcement of lockdown level 3. Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda said, “Rebuilding tourism and hosting events during this period requires innovation to ensure that while people cannot experience our tourism products physically, they can be able to consume them virtually. This is what we committed ourselves to do when we launched our economic recovery plan last year to revive economic sectors that have been adversely affected by COVID-19. “
Mayor Kaunda indicated that the city was ready to host and welcome visitors for the Durban Grand July Experience, that the dual need to ensure that there is tourism activity was as critical as ensuring health regulations are adhered to. He added, As the leadership of this municipality, we have identified sport as an important instrument to position Durban as the preferred venue for international events. We are pleased that over the years, we have been able to offer this experience to our citizens, domestic guests and international tourists. From the cycling community to runners along the promenade, sport has shaped the city and contributed meaningfully to the building of our tourism industry.
