Momentum builds ahead of inaugural Durban Tourism Business' Awards

It’s all systems go for the inaugural Durban Tourism Business’ Awards taking place on 15 June at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre. 

As part of the adjudication process, an independent panel of judges have visited all the nominated products under the service excellence categories (accommodation, experiential, and meetings, exhibitions, and special events) for an onsite inspection. The oversight visit processes concluded on 15 May. 

The public voting process was open for the service excellence category from 11 to 18 March with over 9 500 votes captured. Final adjudication scores that will go to auditors to be presented at the Awards will take place on 23 May. 

The Awards will recognise business in tourism winners with cash and developmental prizes in the following categories:

  • Service Excellence: Accommodation (hotels and non-hotels), Meeting, Exhibition and Special Events Venues, Tourist Guides, Tour Operators, Rickshaw Pullers, and Visitors Experience.
  • Sustainable Development
  • Entrepreneurship
  • The Mayors Choice
  • Upcoming Filmmakers.
The Durban Tourism Business’ Awards aim to recognise businesses that have managed to rise, adapt, and thrive during a turbulent business environment since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
EThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda said: “We are ready to host the Durban Tourism Business’ Awards and will be pulling out all the stops to ensure that we host a spectacular event.”

He said the Awards and its subsidiary events aims to create partnerships, and to motivate and encourage tourism business owners.

“We intend to utilise this platform to ensure that Durban remains the destination of choice for visitors, intra-provincially, domestically and when borders open, internationally. We want to keep Durban top of mind for international visitors,” added Mayor Kaunda.
